Josh Cullen has been lauded in recent weeks for his performances in the middle of Charlton’s midfield.

Such has been the form of the West Ham loanee, Ireland Coach Mick McCarthy called the 22-year-old up for his first international camp in the recent Euro qualifiers.

Cullen has made 22 appearances for The Addicks under Lee Bowyer, playing at the base and out wide in a midfield diamond, where competition is fierce for a starting berth.

“It’s healthy competition,” said Cullen.

“You’ve got players around that you know that if you’re not doing your job for the team then someone else who is a very good player can come in and take your spot.

“We know we’ve got that competition, but we’re relishing it.”

Krystien Bielik, Ben Reeves, Jonny Williams, Joe Aribo, George Lapslie, Darren Pratley and Albie Morgan have all featured in the middle of the park for The Addicks this season, but such has been Charlton’s luck with injuries Bowyer has never had a full roster to choose from. This has meant Cullen playing in a host of roles.

“Wherever the manager wants me to play, I’m happy wherever.

“I enjoy playing at the base of the diamond, getting on the ball, breaking up play and starting attacks off, but I also like playing on the side of it.

“Obviously you can get forward more and be a bit more creative and make things happen, but I wouldn’t say there’s a specific position I prefer.”

Williams & Aribo

Two players who have impressed for the Addicks are Williams and Aribo, players that Cullen was full of praise for.

“Jonny has just come in and gone about his job.

“He’s a fantastic player, who’s had experience in the Premier League and internationally on the big stage.

“If you look at his game you can see why he’s played at that level and I think as a player its always beneficial if you look at other players and see what they do well and see if you can bring that into your game.

“He’s been a great addition.”

Aribo, who has recently been linked with a move to the Premiership with Arsenal, deserves the column inches he’s getting too says Cullen.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Arsenal were interested, because Joe is a top player.

“You can see that from his performances this season and from training you can see he’s a good player.

“He warrants that interest, he’s a great lad, goes about his training the right way every day, so I’m not surprised there is interest elsewhere.”
