The famous Blackheath Tea Hut has made a long-awaited comeback this week following a devastating accident which saw a car plough into the hut whilst people were inside in 2020.

Two people were hospitalised by the crash in January 2020, and the "south east London institution" was left 80% destroyed and structurally unsafe.

But the owner vowed to rebuild, and 18 months on the Blackheath Tea Hut is back serving locals on Goffers Rd in Blackheath.

Images have emerged of the hut being to its new home, slightly further back from the road than before, and local people have been full of excitement.

People commented on the hut's "long-awaited" return, with one person saying "welcome back, we missed you!"

Another person said: "Over the moon about this... as are most of south London’s taxi drivers and breakdown drivers I’d guess!!

Comments ranged from "it's back where it belongs," to simply "Woohoo!!!!"

Back in January 2020, the local community reacted with dismay to the news that the tea hut had been destroyed in a horrific crash.

A Mercedes ploughed through the hut, which had stood in the same spot for 50 years, and a female member of staff suffered a number of injuries, whilst a man inside at the time was also taken to hospital.

But the public rallied around the owner, who pledged that they "would not be defeated" and vowed to rebuild.

Several thousands of pounds were fundraised for the hut which many considered to be "dead" following the crash, and plans were submitted to rebuild in June 2020.

But now resurrected, the small hut will be a welcome sight for south east Londoners once again.
