Two people were hospitalised after a car ploughed into Blackheath's famous tea-hut while they were inside last night.

Emergency services swarmed the scene after a silver Mercedes smashed into the local institution, which has stood in the same spot for more than 50 years, leaving it a wreck at around 7pm.

According to local reports, a female member of staff inside the hut suffered burns, a broken sternum and ribs, having to be was pulled free by bikers at the scene.

A man who was also inside the hut at the time was taken to hospital. Neither of their conditions were considered life threatening or life changing.

The driver of the car, a woman, was treated at the scene. However, police are yet to make any arrests, as enquiries into the incident continue.

A crowdfunding page was set up by locals within hours of the incident, which has already raised £500.

Dawnie Healey, who launched the fund, said: "A very much loved iconic piece of local Blackheath history has been pretty much destroyed this evening due to a car hitting the Tea Hut.

"A much loved member of staff along with a couple of others standing at the Hut at the time, were injured but have been taken to hospital.

"The Tea Hut has been around for many many years, and a frequent meeting place for bikers, car enthusiasts and people stopping by for a cuppa tea and a legendary "Animal Burger".

"I wanted to start this campaign to raise funds to help get the Tea Hut rebuilt ASAP along with funds to help the staff members for any loss of earnings too.

"I used to be a regular biker up the Tea Hut when I lived back in London before I moved over to Wiltshire in 2018 and know Jo, Jackie, George and Shannon (the manager).

"When I do pop over to London, I'd try and make a detour to stop off and say hello, grab a hot choc and a cake and just chill on the bench for a bit while catching up with others up there."

The 24/hr hut is known for serving bikers, emergency service workers and cab drivers throughout the night.

Greenwich Council leader Dan Thorpe tweeted: "Awful pictures from the Blackheath collision tonight.

"The tea hut is a south east London institution. Sending thoughts and prayers to everyone caught up in the accident."
