Bromley manager Mark Goldberg was left devastated as a last-minute winner for Cheltenham Town denied his side a deserved point on Tuesday evening.

The Ravens had plenty of chances to take the lead in the opening twenty minutes, with Charlton loanee Dillon Phillips denying Moses Emmanuel in the visitors’ goal and Pierre Joseph-Dubois crashing a shot against the post.

The visitors, relegated from League Two last season, started to take control in the second period and took the lead with twelve minutes left, as substitute Billy Waters was quickest to react when a long range effort rebounded off Bromley goalkeeper Chris Kettings.

Anthony Cook was brought down in the penalty area and got back to his feet to convert the subsequent spot kick and seemingly earn the Lilywhites a share of the spoils with two minutes of normal time remaining.

But it would be another Robins’ substitute who would claim the winner.

Asa Hall fired home an effort from ten yards as the clocked ticked past ninety minutes and Goldberg was left to rue missed opportunities earlier in the game.

“The first half performance was excellent,” said the Bromley chief.

“We really should have come in at least 1-0 up. We had three excellent chances – chances that in recent weeks we’ve been putting away.

“I was really proud of the lads at half time.

“I thought we commanded the overall possession. They had one or two chances of their own but I think we were in control in the first half.

“Obviously second half it was important that we continued the same momentum but I thought we sat back a little bit.

“I’ve got to be honest, we tired.

“I think for the first time, the recent injury crisis has caught up with us. I looked to see what we had on the bench.

“We really could have done with a little bit more impetus in the middle of the park. We’ve got some very big players that aren’t yet available to us.

Pierre Joseph-Dubois hobbled off in the second half

“We were forced to make a substitution for Pierre Joseph-Dubois, whose got another injury.”

Goldberg was quick to praise the visiting side, who remain second after the victory, whilst Bromley drop down to fifth in the National League table.

“That’s the best team pretty much we’re going to play against,” said Goldberg.

“They’re definitely in the top three. We competed extremely well with a lot of players missing.

“We got ourselves back into the game. You’d like to think that a draw would be a fair result.

“Then we cleared it twice, it fell very nicely for them and got a bit of a deflection but it was so gutting to concede when we really deserved a draw. We’ll take a lot of heart from today.”

The hosts lost both captain Rob Swaine and Pierre Joseph-Dubois to injury during the game and Goldberg displayed concern about the extent of the latter’s knock.

“With Rob Swaine it’s precautionary,” he explained.

“His hamstring was tight. It was important that he didn’t get a twinge that would see him out for a few weeks. We just about saved him from further injury by bringing him off.

“Pierre looks like he’s done some ankle ligaments. I thought he’d done really well today, it’s so disappointing”

The Hayes Lane side are suffering from an injury crisis at the moment and it shows no sign of easing in the next couple of weeks according to the Bromley manager.

“I think Max Porter is still a couple of weeks away,” he admitted.

“Ben May is probably still three or four weeks away, as is Alex Wall. We also had a couple of dead legs tonight.

Louis Dennis missed the game through illness

“Louis Dennis was ill and unavailable due to a high temperature, hopefully we’ll have him back on Saturday.”

The defeat was only Bromley’s second in ten games, with the remaining eight all victories as the Ravens have found their feet in the top flight of non-league football following promotion last season.

Goldberg said his squad won’t let themselves get too down after losing out to a side who were playing league football last season.

“We’ll maintain our confidence,” he explained.

“Today was a gauge of where we are. I’m absolutely devastated that we didn’t get a point, because I do think in the end we deserved a point.

“We will take some heart from the fact that we competed right to the end with a depleted squad.”
