Player negotiations won’t be affected by Lee Bowyer’s own contract talks, insists the Charlton boss.

With an offer on the table for the Addicks boss, and the club also looking to tie down players for next season, the manager believes the two are mutually exclusive.

Bowyer was offered a deal on Wednesday to extend his stay at The Valley and believes players’ decisions to stay at the club should be made separately.

“We are trying to sign players because it’s the right thing to do for the football club and their careers,” he said.

“If it wasn’t right for them or us we wouldn’t offer a deal.

“Whatever happens to myself in the long-term wouldn’t affect players in signing a contract.”

One player the club are eager to sign to a long-term deal is Joe Aribo.

The midfielder has been linked with Arsenal in recent weeks but Bowyer says the club are doing all they can to get pen to paper with the 22-year-old.

“We are constantly trying to get that over the line.

“It’s been difficult, but Joe loves it here, he’s learning , and improving and he knows it’s a good place to carry on doing that

“There’s just a few stumbling blocks we are trying to get to the bottom of.”

'They'll get you no matter what'

The manager dismissed the notion that delays in any progress in negotiations were down to players waiting to see what division Charlton will be in next year.

“I don’t believe that, I don’t think that should be a reason to sign or not to sign.

“Because if you do well as a player, whether you get promoted or not this season wouldn’t stop someone coming into buy you, look at Karlan [Grant].

“He was only here the six months of season, and he went.

“So if someone wants you, they’ll come and get you no matter what, but you have to keep playing well.”
