Swimmers across Bexley swam 183.5km - 7,340 lengths - as part of a weekend of fundraising.

Taking part in the national Swimathon over the weekend of March 21 and 22, swimmers raised money for Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie at leisure centres in Crook Log, Erith and Sidcup.

Swimathon, launched in 1986, is the world’s largest annual fundraising swim event and has raised more than £55 million through the efforts of more than 750,000 swimmers.

This year’s beneficiaries were Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie, who will use the funds raised to support frontline care and research.

Charmaine Wells, centre manager at Crook Log Leisure Centre, said: "We are incredibly proud of everyone who donned their goggles and took part this weekend. Seeing the community come together across all three of our sites to support such an important cause is inspiring.

"Every length swam and every pound raised makes a massive difference. Completing 880 lengths at Crook Log alone is a phenomenal physical feat.

"When you add in the incredible efforts from Erith and Sidcup, the scale of this achievement really hits home."

At Crook Log, 14 swimmers covered 22km, with five completing the 500m challenge, six swimming 1.5km, two stepping up for the 2.5k challenge, and two finishing the full 5km distance.

Erith Leisure Centre saw 16 swimmers take on a combined total of 34km.

At Sidcup, 59 swimmers covered a distance of 127.5km, which equates to 5,100 lengths.

All three participating leisure centres offer a range of facilities, including swimming pools, gyms and fitness classes, to support health and wellbeing across the community.
