Hundreds of bags stuffed with medical waste and McDonald's cups have been dumped on the banks of the River Quaggy.

The rubbish, spotted along Lee High Road in Lewisham, was collected and cleared by the Quaggy Waterways Action Group (QWAG).

Shocking images on Facebook showed 200 bags worth of waste piled high near the river embankments.

The QWAG's Facebook post said: "We’ve removed 200 bags stuffed with medical waste and #McdonaldsMess coffee cups from the banks of the #RiverQuaggy.

"River used as a dumping ground for most of 2023 by a person, who needs to be tracked".

These volunteers, along with Lewisham Council staff, have worked tirelessly to tidy the area and are now investigating to trace the culprits of the fly-tipping incident.

In a message of thanks on Facebook, Lewisham Council said: "Thanks to the fantastic Quaggy Waterways Action Group volunteers for their work helping create a Cleaner Lewisham.

"Our teams worked with QWAG to take the bags away and will be investigating the dumped rubbish to identify those responsible for the fly-tipping and take enforcement action."

Lewisham council have recommended various measures to curb fly-tipping, and create a cleaner, healthier community, on their website.

They urge residents to report any fly-tipping and street cleaning issues they encounter, using the Love Clean Streets website or app.

Residents are also reminded to secure all waste and recycling in the correct bins for collection and not to leave any unwanted items or rubbish in public places, which is illegal.

Anyone found doing so could face an on-the-spot £400 fine and risk further enforcement action.

The council also encourages residents to join in local litter picks to help keep Lewisham clean and tidy.

They can provide litter pickers and bags to those interested.

Fly-tipping is a serious offence and those with information about someone responsible are urged to report it to Lewisham Council's Environmental Crime Enforcement team.
