A Victorian boozer is proud of its ties to the local rugby club and the sport’s wider history.

The Princess of Wales, located at 1a Montpelier Row, Blackheath, was rebuilt in 1865 by the Cator Blackheath Estate.

This local gem underwent renovations in October 2022, giving it a revamped and cosy atmosphere that still pays homage to the original venue.

The Princess of Wales proudly boasts having one of the oldest surviving bar backs in the country, according to assistant manager Holly.

It has also played a significant role in the world of rugby, being linked to the renowned Blackheath Rugby Club.

In fact, it served as a changing room during England’s first-ever home international match against Wales on March 19, 1881, at Richardson's Field in Blackheath.

One of the standout features of this pub is its beer garden, complete with heated garden huts and a retractable canopy to protect pub goers from the unpredictable British weather.

The Princess of Wales says it has a strong commitment to being a welcoming and inclusive establishment by being dog-friendly, family-friendly, and fully accessible for wheelchair users.

Holly added: “We are technically owned by Mitchells & Butlers under the Castle Pubs brand but we get a lot of freedom to make the place our own, giving it the atmosphere of a local pub.”

The pub offers a range of delicious food and drink options with a menu featuring “elevated pub grub with a twist”, including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options.

Seafood lovers adore their offerings such as crispy calamari, a seafood sharing platter, and soft shell crab.
