A Bexley MP has pledged his backing to Rishi Sunak to replace Boris Johnson as the new Prime Minister.
Conservative MP for Old Bexley and Sidcup, Louie French, said Rishi Sunak has the attributes to restore trust in politics.
French also said the former finance minister has the economic experience to navigate “challenging” times.
11 Tory MPs initially put themselves forward to be the leader of the Conservatives after Boris Johnson was forced to resign.
It has now been narrowed to the final two as Sunak and foreign secretary Liz Truss battle it out to become Britain's next Prime Minister.
French said that Sunak has helped thousands of people during the pandemic through schemes such as furlough and Covid support grants.
French explained: “These schemes were instrumental in ensuring that many local businesses could survive.
“With Rishi’s support, local families will be supported this winter with an unprecedented £37 billion package of support to help with the cost of living.
"Each household will receive £400 off their energy bill, whilst eight million of the most vulnerable households across the country will get £1,200 of one-off support in total this year to help with the cost of living."
The 1922 Committee, which is running the election, will announce the new leader on September 5 with Johnson remaining as a caretaker Prime Minister until then.
