A CATARACT surgery provider is offering free transport for appointments.

SpaMedica can offer appointments to patients who need to restore their sight within just four weeks.

Bromley residents can also benefit from free door to door transport service who might be unable to access the surgery.

Amanda Jones, regional manager for SpaMedica in the South-East, said they want NHS patients to benefit from their services.

She adds “Cataracts can rob people of their quality of life and independence, but for the majority of people it is a treatable condition, and the procedure itself is quick and straightforward.”

According to the provider, 30% of adults aged 65 and over will have a cataract where 450,000 surgeries performed each year in the UK alone.

The transport service averages over 1,500 patients journey to and from their appointments each month.

David Bell, driver of SpaMedica, decided to join the team in late 2020 due to his personal experiences with cataract.

He said: “My mum had cataracts in both of her eyes and had the procedure. She’s now 87 and still driving her 4x4, so I know first-hand the difference this surgery makes, and I can put patients at ease.

"All patient drivers have the opportunity to go in to observe the surgery, which means we know what it’s like and can reassure the patients if any of them are apprehensive.”
