Donald Trump Ban - Helpful?    Eva Nacci   Sydenham High School

Recently, there has been a petition to ban President Donald Trump from visiting the UK in a state visit. The petition was launched on the UK Government's petition page, and read : ‘{President Trump} should not be invited to make an official State Visit because it would cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen.’

It only took a day for the petition to take an unexpected turn of events when more than one million votes were presented, by far surpassing the 100,000 necessary for a Parliamentary debate.

However, Downing Street has not changed their view on the matter. The reason concerning Prime Minister Theresa May.

A Number 10 spokesman informed the millions of petition signers that: "An invitation has been extended and accepted."

Therefore, the President will be doing the UK the honour of a visit, despite the impending embarrassment that this could cause the Queen, that is, of course, something to be avoided at all costs.

What does this have to do with us? People all over Lewisham, Penge and Bromley have also had their say in the matter. Out of the million of voters, we formed the 0.6%, with over 5,721 individual voters collected in our local neighbourhood.

Finally, what is your opinion on this? Is it a good way to ‘protest’. Following the great tradition of Amnesty International letters, and the millions of peaceful marches throughout history, is this an effective way to protest? Or would it have simply been better to have kept quite, since the outcome remains the same.

All we can hope is that the Queen is not too embarrassed.
