Charlton interim boss Karel Fraeye wants the managerial post permanently despite getting off to a 3-0 losing start at Middlesbrough.

The Belgian has also urged fans to back the team and help him save Charlton.

After a resilient first-half from the Addicks, two quick-fire goals followed up with another late on led to a ninth loss in 11 games.

Charlton, who have now lost 3-0 in three successive matches, frustrated the Smoggies for an hour but were undone with strikes from David Nugent, Albert Adomah and Daniel Aylala.

Fraeye said: “I do not know how long I’ll be interim Head Coach for so it’s not up to me.

“My position is not important and my objective is clear - get Charlton out of the bottom three as soon as possible.

“If I did not have the belief to help Charlton, I would not be here.

“I would be crazy not to accept the offer.”

The Addicks managed only two shots on target and never really looked like scoring and the game plan was clear; sit back and snatch a draw.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s 41st minute deflected shot trickled into the hands of Boro goalie Dimi Konstantopoulos and substitute Reza Ghoochannejhad tested him late on.

When asked about the supposed planned protests before the Sheffield Wednesday game next week, the Belgian urged fans to back the team.

He added: “I can only say that I think the players are in a difficult situation and the last thing they want is the crowd not to get behind them.

“If the fans do not get behind the team, then it will make it hard for the 11 players on the pitch.

“I have had chats with every player and not one has said the squad is not good enough.

“The players want to win, you could see their mentality was good today, and if they say it’s good enough, who am I to judge?

“It’s up to them to get the results they need.”

Charlton could slip to second bottom in the league if Bolton fail to lose at Preston this evening (October 31).

The former boss of third division side VW Hamme revealed he did not have to answer fans’ questions about whether he was experienced enough to lead Charlton out of trouble.

He said: “I am 37-years-old, I’ve been training first teams for seven years and coaching for 19.

“I do not need to defend myself.”
