Chris Solly has pledged his future to Charlton regardless of the division they’re in next season.

And the Addicks first-team skipper is eyeing the club captaincy when Johnnie Jackson retires this month.

Solly, 27, has captained Charlton for the majority of the past two seasons - and feels he can fill the void left by Jackson.

The right-back, who made his Charlton debut nine years ago, told News Shopper: “I’ve been fortunate enough to be vice-captain to Jacko for the past few years.

“I’ve learned a lot from him, he’s a brilliant captain - everyone can see that on and off the pitch.

“I’d like to think I’ve picked up a lot from him and I’ll use that myself, taking that responsibility. It [being club captain] is something I’d love to do. I’ve captained the side quite regularly for the past few seasons.

“It’s a real honour to do it here and it’s something I enjoy. I like the extra responsibility and I like being able to give advice to some of the younger players coming through.

“We’re renowned for bringing youngsters through. At the moment, the academy is thriving with the Under-18s and Under-23s both in finals.

“Hopefully we’ll see a few more of them coming through and I’d like to guide them as much as I can.”

Solly, who has just one year left on his contract, wants to stay at Charlton next season - whether that’s in the Championship or League One.

He said: “I’ve stated many times I love being at the club. I’ve been here for a long time now. I came through the academy, I know the Charlton way, I know what it means to the fans.

“I remember when I was a kid coming through and it was a year after we won the League One title [in 2012], Jacko and other boys said they'd be surprised if I’d be here in the next amount of years.

“But in the back of my head, I always thought I’d be here for a long time. I’ve always admired one-club players - and I’d love to do that here.

“I’m happy here, I’m concentrating on my football, and hopefully I’ll come back as a Championship player next season.”

Charlton have all but secured their League One play-off place ahead of the final game of the regular season against Rochdale tomorrow.

Seventh-placed Plymouth would need an unlikely seven-goal swing to knock Lee Bowyer’s men out of the top six.

Solly was an unused substitute in Charlton’s last play-off run when they lost to Swindon in the 2010 semi-finals.

He said: “I remember it quite clearly, not so much the away game, but I remember the home game.

“We were 2-0 up, there were a couple of red cards and Miguel [Llera] got sent off and the penalties, we all know how that ended.

“Now, it’s exciting times for everyone and we’re looking forward to it. Hopefully, touch wood, Saturday will go smoothly and then we’ll focus on the play-offs next week.

“There are a few players who have been involved in the play-offs before, but it’s a strange experience.

“I can’t really compare it to anything else, it’s high-pressured games and you've got to make sure you get the result - you have two chances to perform and there’s no room for error.

“It’s likely we’ll finish fifth or sixth so we’ll be at home in the first leg, which I think is a positive because if we get a good result at home, I’d back us going anywhere to get a result.”

Solly suffered a knee injury against Blackpool in March, which will sideline him until pre-season. He is yet to play under caretaker boss Bowyer.

Charlton were five points off the top six when Bowyer took charge, but could now finish as high as fifth if they beat Rochdale and Scunthorpe lose to Bradford.

Solly, who played in the Addicks’ last win at Rochdale in 2011, added: “My knee feels good. I had a clear-out two weeks ago and they said the rehab would be between four to six weeks.

“So I’m two weeks into it and it’s going really well. I’m back in the gym doing my leg strengthening and stuff and it’s going well. So I’ll hopefully be back as soon as possible.

“I hate going to the games [when I’m injured]. I’m more nervous watching than I am playing. I’ve been to all the home games and I’ve been following the away games - I turn on my notifications on Twitter and I just watch the updates come through.

“I won’t be travelling to Rochdale because I’ll be at the training ground doing my rehab. But I’ll be in early and done by the afternoon and ready to watch the game on TV.”
