Alou Diarra believes the manner in which Charlton threw away a two-goal lead against rock-bottom Bolton was due to “too many mistakes.”

The Addicks were 2-0 up within the first 26 minutes courtesy of two Ademola Lookman strikes, but the Trotters did not give up the fight and got back into the game as Emile Heskey scored his first goal in nearly a year.

Josh Vela’s deflected effort just before half-time levelled the match to complete Neil Lennon's side's fightback, leaving Diarra feeling frustrated with the nature of Charlton’s defending for the goals.

“There were too many mistakes. First, we have to stop the cross coming in and then we have to read it,” said the 2006 World Cup finalist.

“Unfortunately, Harry [Lennon] touched it and Heskey comes from behind to score. We have to win the challenges and stop the cross because it was very dangerous.

“The second goal is horrible. He’s 30 yards not under any pressure. I don’t understand that.”

Karel Fraeye labelled the side’s point as “useless” and Diarra sympathised with his interim head coach’s emotions following the draw.

He said: “The manager was right to be angry. We led 2-0 and were controlling the game but we have given a point to Bolton.

“We’re all very disappointed because we didn’t do the right things after our goals.

“We dropped off and let them play. We needed to control the game more after our two goals because we didn’t get the right attitude after we were two goals in front.”

Charlton now travel to fifth-placed Burnley on Saturday and the 34-year-old versatile Frenchman has called for his teammates to react to the disappointing draw against the Trotters by earning points at Turf Moor.

“Four points was the minimum for our last two home games. We only took two and now we have no other solution other than to start taking points away from home,” said Diarra, once on the books of sides such as Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

“If we can’t win games at home then we have to get points away and the next target will be a tough game in Burnley. We have to be ready for this.

“We lost two points this evening and in our situation that is not comfortable.”
