PLANS to redevelop Enfield Golf Course came a step closer last week after club members agreed in a ballot to press on with talks with the council to find a new site for the club.

The council hopes to turn Enfield Golf Course into a public park, with the provisional name of the Elizabeth Park, to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

About ten acres of the new 90-acre park would be given over to residential development, which council officials believe will generate around £20million.

If the plans go ahead, the golf course is likely to move to Rectory Farm in The Ridgeway, Enfield.

A feasibility study of the area is underway, which is set to confirm that an 18-hole golf course, a club house, and possibly another nine-hole course can be built on the site.

The next stage of development has been detailed in an internal council report.

Cllr Andrew Stafford, cabinet member for property, said: "Although there is still a long way to go and negotiations are still at an early stage, the golf club ballot is tremendously good news.

"As a teenage caddy at Enfield Golf Club, it is an institution close to my heart.

"I welcome the prospect that, with the council's help, the club will be able to move to the newest and best amateur golf facility in Middlesex."

A spokesman for the golf club said: "A significant number of those who took part in the ballot decided to continue negotiations with the council. A good proportion of members voted."
