AROUND 500 students and staff had to be evacuated after three huts caught fire in the grounds of Bromley College, Rookery Lane.

Six fire engines were called to the site at 8.30am this morning, where firefighters battled the blaze for just over an hour.

Although the huts are some distance from the main college building, staff and students were evacuated at 9.20am for half an hour.

The single storey timber huts are used by the college for storage and were completely destroyed by the fire.

A college spokesman said: "Staff and students were evacuated but it was very much a precautionary measure. We are back up and running as normal now."

No casualties were reported during the blaze and the cause of the fire is now under investigation.
