A festival of light brought a glow to a Whetstone day care centre when it opened its doors last week. Nearly 200 guests gathered at Anand day centre on Wednesday to celebrate the festival of Diwali with a colourful array of dance, food and music.

The centre, based at Manor Drive Methodist Church, offers activities for elderly Asian people, including music and movement, meditation and relaxation.

Members and staff were joined by Barnet Asian Women’s Association (BAWA) for the celebrations, enjoying traditional Indian food and Bollywood dancing.

The Diwali festival, characterised by lights, fireworks and sweets, celebrates the victory of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. It is the high point of the religious calendar for Hindus, Jains and Sikhs.

Nila Patel is the care co-ordinator for ASRA Greater London Housing Association, which manages the Anand centre. She said: “The Diwali celebrations at the Anand day centre get bigger and better every year.

“This is the first time we have joined with BAWA in our celebrations and it was a wonderful event enjoyed by all.”
