ARMED police are to patrol the streets of Harringay after a gang fight left one man dead

Alisan Dogan, 43, died from from stab wounds received in the incident at 6.10pm on Saturday in Portland Gardens.

The fight, involving around 40 armed men, is thought to have started in the Grand Parade area of Green Lanes.

The men, who are thought by witnesses to be Turkish or Kurdish, were fighting with knives, baseball bats and guns.

A further 20 people needed hospital treatment.

The area around Green Lanes was cordoned off while a forensic examination too place on Sunday.

The incident room has received hundreds of calls from members of the public.

Haringey's police commander Chief Supt Stephen James said the incident was related to heroin trade and the balance of power of the drug industry in the borough.

He said all investigative resources will be used and that an "unprecedented" murder squad is being set up under control of Supt Peter Ship, based at Edmonton.

Officers will be moved from other duties to deal with this.

Chief Supt James said officers were aware of various links with heroin and protection.

He added that there may also be family ties involved.

Chief Supt James said: "We are allocating a great deal of resources into solving this.

"There will be an ongoing police presence including armed officers to ensure that the area is safe and secure and to reassure the public who are being supportive of our investigation. We would appeal for anyone with information to come forward."

Haringey Council leader George Meehan said: "The incident at Green Lanes is a great concern to us.

"While I understand the needs for high security in central London, we do need it in Haringey as well."
