A London architecture firm has revealed an ingenious idea for improving the much-maligned Circle line of the Tube – replace the whole route with a travelator.

NBBJ has presented its radical thinking for curing the line of the congestion, delays and general unpleasantness that blights millions of people’s commutes around the capital.

Its concept proposes replacing the 17 miles of London Underground track with airport-style electronic walkways.

There would be three lanes side by side, each increasing in speed.

Passengers would enter on a 3mph lane, with the outer lane running at a top speed of 15mph.

This Is Local London:

NBBJ says that if commuters walked on the fastest lane at 3mph they would actually travel quicker than Circle Line trains which have to stop at each station.

It’s also claimed journeys would be more enjoyable and healthier.

You might think the travelator idea sounds ridiculous, but then people probably said that about creating a 17-mile circular train track when the Circle line opened 110 years, so outlandish solutions can become reality.

That said, the walkways idea does conjure up chaotic images of lots of people falling over as they switch lanes so there would obviously be a lot of things that need ironing out first!
