THESE children took a risk when they fed the swans in Richmond Park, Oatlands, in July 1955. After all, as any Scots granny will tell you, a swan can break a man's arm with a simple flap of its mighty wings!

Whether any such attack has ever happened is a moot point, but it certainly usually allows the swans to mate and breed free from any human interference. However, that's not to say they don't mind the occasional free meal from us.

Opened in September 1899, the park is undergoing massive regeneration. And who knows, the offspring of these swans may still be regular visitors.
