May 17, 2001 17:13: WITH election fever in full swing, many issues will be raised and, sadly, many will remain ignored.

Over the last two years I have been involved with campaigning for improved services and support for people living with HIV/AIDS. North London has an appalling record for offering real support for the many hundreds in the area living with the virus. The only centre, FACTS, was closed down last year.

For too long those controlling funding have ignored those with the virus. Consultation with sufferers and doctors has been nil.

One great problem has been the ability of the authorities to refer to those with HIV as 'high risk groups' ie gay or black, thus hoping to silence intelligent debate by focusing on minority groups. The facts are different. HIV affects all the population, the virus isn't prejudiced.

Over the coming year 'Consultnorthlondon' will be challenging and demanding that the voice of those living with, or affected by the virus (partners, family and friends) are consulted over services and the support needed.

The issue of HIV and AIDS can no longer be ignored indeed the authorities have been able to carry out cuts and deny services because they rely on the stigma attached to this growing issue within the area.

'Consultnorthlondon' is not publicly funded, therefore we are not restrained in voicing our concerns of poor funding of support and services. Anyone interested in knowing more can contact us (in confidence) our e-maiI address, 'consultnorth lonon@hotmail.com
