In a time of social distancing and self-isolation, it’s easy to overlook the inspirational efforts of local people to brighten the community. At the moment, it’s more important than ever to focus on the positive aspects of life and commemorate the brilliant individuals who are working to promote goodness, gratitude, and generosity in the community.

The Help Lewisham Hospital network is a brand new team that donates food, household items, and essential materials to NHS employees at Lewisham Hospital. Located on Lewisham High Street, it is a volunteer-ran, drop-in establishment that is open from 7am-11pm every day. The Help Lewisham Hospital network has been open on the high street for less than two weeks, yet they currently help over 160 NHS workers per day, allowing them to avoid busy supermarkets and subsequently minimise their chances of contracting coronavirus. In order to help the network, local businesses have been donating food and essential products. Recently, the Turkish Food Centre Catford have kindly volunteered to supply eighty baked goods per day, and there’s no doubt that every one will go to an extremely deserving individual. As of the 31st March, the Help Lewisham Hospital network have raised over £10,000, an amazing sum that proves how wonderful the community can be during a time of crisis.

Additionally, other members of the community are doing their bit to cheer up the local people. The talented opera singer, Fabienne Borget, has been performing a daily recital from her own front garden, entertaining the neighbours and a growing audience.

Thanks to Lewisham Local, Voluntary Services Lewisham, and Age UK Lewisham and Southwark, volunteers have been delivering food and essential supplies to vulnerable people and using the telephone to provide social isolation support. Clearly, the response of local citizens has been one of considerable kindness.

It’s more important than ever to promote positive mindsets and draw attention to the truly inspirational efforts of local people to lift the spirits of the community. From donating supplies to the wonderful NHS employees to brightening your neighbours’ days with mini-concerts, the citizens of Lewisham are making the most of social distancing during this unprecedented time.
