In the uncertain times that we are currently living in, its important to have a part of our day where we can sit down and relax, without having to worry about what scary things that are going on outside. A good way to relax and unwind is to read a book.

A study performed in the university of Sussex stated that reading can help reduce stress levels by 68% and it also helps to relieve stress a lot quicker than other methods of relaxation. However, when choosing a book to read it is important to choose a book that is good for you; you can’t relax whilst reading something that you don’t understand or distresses you.

Reading also helps to broaden your knowledge, there is a positive correlation between the more books you read and your general knowledge. By reading a variety of literature, you immerse yourself in different cultures and become more educated about the world around you. This makes you a more understanding and aware of the world around you.

Similarly, in academic situations, it is evident which students frequently read as on average they achieve much higher grade than those who don’t. Speaking to student Charlotte Miller, she has stated that she believes reading books is important because “They help you expand your vocabulary and give you a greater imagination”, both of these things allow you to do well in English exams.

In numerous studies, it has been proven that reading helps with mental stimulation and this could ultimately lead to reducing the effects of Alzheimer’s on an elderly person. But in current times, it can decrease the amount of time you spend feeling bored.

Overall, reading is important because it improves you as person, making you more knowledgeable, helping to keep you relaxed and giving you something to do with your time. During this stressful time, I’m sure it will be beneficial for everyone to be able to escape into a fictional universe where they can forget what is going on at the moment.
