WHY IS LITTER CLOGGING UP OUR CANALS?
ISSUE 5 BY SHAAN JASSAL
Canals. What do you think of when you hear this word? When I was younger, I thought of nature, calmness and beauty. However years later - when I see the canal everyday when walking to school - I only think of digust and disappointment. Why, you may ask? Because of litter. The once beautiful canal is drowning in bottles and wrappers, completely destroying this environmental beauty.
Not only does this litter harm our eyes, it also harms the habitats that live there: fish, ducks, birds and more. These bottles and wrappers can suffocate these innocent creatures, all because of our laziness. There are plenty of bins around the area, so why are some people so selfish and lazy that they can't even put their rubbish in the bin. This image to the side is just a small depiction of the horror that our canal has become.
It's time to make a change. It can start by educating everyone about the harm that litter can cause, and to raise awareness of the concequences of our actions.
