A combination of the bank holiday and typical holiday weekend weather deterred many of Istead and Ifield’s Harriers from racing at the weekend.

Eight members did, however, make the effort and managed to post a couple of top-three performances.

At the Blackheath and Bromley hosted Ted Pepper 10km road race, David Abery ran a great race to be the third over 50 finisher.

Club president Bob Carter, however, managed to improve on this by being second in his age group, in the process winning the Southern Counties Veterans Championship race in the over 70 age group.

Meanwhile at Whitstable, over 500 runners took part in the annual Bank Holiday Monday 10km road race organised by Canterbury Harriers.

Istead members Nick Claydon and John Gillis had a close battle with Nick eventually finishing just ahead.

On the track and field, Istead and Ifield Harriers made a promising start to the season at Newham, where the men’s team of David Abery, Andrew Archer, Paul Bunch, Bob Carter, Simon Parrin and Chris Thompson combined well to take part in 16 events.

They finished in an impressive fourth place from seven teams in Divison Four E of the Southern Counties League.
