Blackheath 25 v 3 Ipswich

Women's South East League One

BLACKHEATH are the champions of South East League One.

While the champagne is tentatively put on ice until the May play-offs for promotion to Premiership Two there is still a lot to celebrate as Blackheath have played champagne rugby along the way to being crowned Champions.

Ipswich tried to spoil the party at the start claiming the first points courtesy of a penalty kick.

However, if there were suggestions Blackheath had gone to sleep in the early stages they responded robustly to the 3-0 wake-up call.

By the time Blackheath scored their fifth unanswered try in the last quarter it was Ipswich who must have felt their early lead was a distant dream.

The Blackheath front five stood up well to the opposition.

A strong scrum wheeled in the Club's favour allowing No 8 Clare Revell to stretch to the line to score.

Ipswich failed to clear their lines at crucial moments.

Their scrum-half was turned over after collecting from a defensive scrum and Jenny Craggs, supported by her forward cohorts, drove forward but was stopped just short.

Revell proved to be the scourge of Ipswich again by collecting the ball at the ruck to dive over.

Blackheath backs had panache and confidence in abundance and their hunger to surge past the gain line was complimented by the presence of flankers Emily Longmore and Helena Train who ensured the backs were not starved of quick balls.

Winger Elaine Jaxon showed safe hands and quick feet to score twice.

In the first half she caught an Ipswich clearance kick and shimmied past her opposing number to score.

In the second half scrum-half Janet Livesey evaded a couple of tackles with dexterity to off-load to Elaine who headed for the corner.

Substitute Kate Kelly also crossed the try-line after centres Sarah Wilson and Lynn Hynn drew their opponents and deftly passed the ball down the line.
