THREE devotees to the world of disabled sport have been named winners of the London Sports Awards.

Mandy Pullen and Kay Salter from Orpington and Andrew Martin from Lewisham received the awards in recognition of their achievements in, or services to, their chosen sport.

Kay Salter won the coach of the year award for her work at the Falcon Spartak Gymnastic Club, based at Hurstmere Boys School, Hurst Road, Sidcup.

The 64-year-old has helped athletes to national and international successes while working to make the sport more inclusive for disabled people.

She said: "I am very proud. I have a wonderful bunch of gymnasts which I work with, I am very fortunate.

"It is like an extended family and everyone supports everyone else."

She added: "The world has realised if people have a disability there is still something they can do.

"People are more aware and want to help in any way they can."

Besides running five regular sessions each week, she helped establish the biggest floor and vault in the country for disabled athletes from across the country and developed a new badging system which is accessible for practically any disabled gymnast.

The second winner Mandy, 21, is one of Kay's pupils and she won the sportswoman of the year award after being named national champion in rhythmic gymnastics for the fifth consecutive year.

Eighteen-year-old Andrew, who won the junior sportsman of the year category, travelled to France for the fourth World Dwarf Games where he won seven gold, three silver and two bronze medals.

He also volunteers as a lifeguard as well as a trampolining and football coach.
