TWO brothers are going to prove disability is no barrier and follow in the footsteps of our great Olympians.

Twins Huseyin and Hasan Er are planning to build on any successes by our athletes at the Athens' games and Paralympics and add yet more gold at the Deaflympics.

Both siblings, 19, in their final year at Lewisham College studying soccer, have been selected to represent the Great Britain football team and jet out to Melbourne, Australia, in December, in readiness for the tournament which starts the following month.

They were spotted by Great Britain coach Philip Garden while playing for St John's Deaf Football Club, which is based in Tottenham.

Huseyin caught the trainer's attention as a striker after his deadly accuracy in front of goal bagged him 46 goals last season.

He has since played twice for the British team, scoring two goals.

Hasan, whose eye-catching performances at the heart of the St John's defence determined his place in the squad, has yet to represent Britain.

The teenagers were both delighted at their international call up and say they are determined to help Britain win the tournament for the first time since 1989.

Communication has an integral role to play in the game of football and as one might imagine, it is difficult for those with hearing difficulties.

But the lads were determined not let their disability prevent them enjoying their football.

Hasan said: "On the deaf side we sign to one another, but on the hearing side we have to keep our eyes alert to everything on the pitch at all times."

Huseyin added: "We were born with normal hearing until we turned three. We are not totally deaf and we use hearing aids when we play so can hear some things, especially the referee's whistle!

"Our sight is very important to us when we play too and of course we both read the game well, which helps us predict what another player will do."

Britain have won the Deaflympics football tournament five times and finished runners up on three occasions since the inaugural games in 1924.

The last time being at the Christchurch games, in New Zealand, with a 5-0 final win over Ireland in 1989.

As for the immediate future, the pair who were originally born in Turkey but moved to England as four-year-olds, dream of an even bigger stage as the prepare for the new season with FC Leyton.

Hasan said: "We both want to keep playing football and hopefully be a professionals one day."
