LAST weekend produced an array of success and achievement which will be long remembered by members of the Meapa Gymnastics Club in Gravesend.

They turned out in force to compete at the south east regional women’s championships at Spectrum Leisure Centre in Guildford.

More than 200 gymnasts took part, representing 17 different clubs from Kent, Sussex and Surrey.

Ranging in ages from seven to 15, the girls performed close to 800 exercises over the weekend across the four disciplines of vault, floor, beam and bars.

A thrilling atmosphere was felt throughout the competition, which saw the highly talented girls from The Meapa walk away with a host of medals.

Hollie Podger delivered a memorable performance at her first regional championship representing Meapa, winning a gold medal for her overall performance at level six, with her team mate Rebecca Kalli claiming bronze.

Annaya Appleby-Mason won silver at level three and will now go onto represent the south east at the British national finals at Guildford in November.

Other winners included: Millie Wilson (bronze level five), Piper Hudson (bronze in the highly-competitive Espoir Challenge) and Amber Croucher (bronze in the very demanding Junior Challenge).

In addition, the girls did amazingly well within the team events where, totalling the three top scores from each gymnast in the different levels, Meapa won gold in level six and bronze in both levels five and four.

Ukrainian Yuriy Zhovtyuk, head coach at Meapa, said: “The girls worked very hard to prepare for the competition and this was reflected in the high quality performances they produced.

“It’s amazing to think of the progress the girls have made and the success they have had in the relatively short time they have been involved with competitive gymnastics.

“The girls often come to us with nothing more than enthusiasm, motivation and a desire to be the best they can.

“We take those qualities and give them first class training to become the champions of tomorrow.

“It’s an exciting opportunity open to any interested youngster.”
