ONCE again, Vigo contrived to throw away a chance of victory by allowing Ashford to come from behind to snatch a draw in the dying moments of the game.

After a brace of tries in a minute from Luke Spiers had given them what appeared to be a scrappy win over the east Kent side, Vigo took their foot off the pedal and paid the price.

Vigo had started slowly against a young and enthusiastic side, falling behind in the second minute to a J.J. Murray penalty but Dave Dunn finished off a push over try to take the lead.

However, the Villagers just could not find any rhythm with Ashford’s pace causing them problems at the breakdown.

Two more Murray penalties gave Ashford a narrow lead at half-time.

The coach’s hair dryer was out at the break and Vigo heeded the words, blasting at Ashford in the second half.

Spiers cruised over for a fine pair of tries 10 minutes into the second period, both converted by Dave Winstone, and this really should have been the threshold for victory.

Ashford clung grimly on and as Vigo got sloppy, worked themselves back into the match.

Another Murray penalty gave them hope and a Joe Lakin try gave them substance.

Murray, needless to say, levelled the score with the conversion.

In a frantic last two minutes, Winstone essayed a drop goal, only to have it charged down and Ashford streamed upfield for a heart stopping moment looking as if to snatch an unlikely win.

Fortunately, Vigo managed to scramble the ball away in time.
