Bexley lost their first match of the Kent Premier League season on Saturday against lowly-placed Lordswood, but the mood in the Bexley camp was one to put that defeat behind them when they travelled to take on Wycoimbe House in the second round of the Evening Standard Challenge Trophy on Sunday.

It was an important toss for captain Bexley Gary Myers to win on a scorching hot day, with very little breeze to help the fielders.

Bexley openers James Hockley and Ed Tyler, who was in the side following his century for the 2nd XI the previous day, set about thrashing the ball to all parts the small Wycombe House ground. putting 50 on the board inside eight overs.

The pair went on to put on 125 for the first wicket at the halfway point, before Tyler was leg before to a slow bowler who was the only one to cause minor problems for the batsmen. Hockley eventually made 81 at almost a run-a-ball, with 11 fours and a six, before being caught on the boundary.

James Golding made a fine 58 off only 47 balls and was supported by Babar Khan, returning to form with 42 after a difficult start to the season. That pushed the total up to 276 – a target the Division 3 side wqere bound to find hard to make.

Golding, having made a contribution with the bat, struck with the third ball of the innings and again in his next over to leave the home side at 0-2, which became 3-3 in the next over.

Wycombe were bowled out for 150 in a ball short of 38 overs, with Golding the pick of the bowlers taking 4-46 to round off a fine all-round display.

Bexley will be hoping for a home tie in the next round on Sunday, July 5, what could be six away cup ties by this date. Next Saturday, Bexley have Folkestone away in the league, before travelling to play Reading in the ECB National Cup fourth round on Sunday – the first attempt hampered by the weather. Should Bexley win this game, they will be away to Saffron Waldon the following week.
