THE first-ever school judo tournament took place in Dartford and proved a resounding success.
Dartford Judokwai Club, which hosted the event, invited competitors from the seven schools at which it has after-school judo clubs run by club's coaches.
A year ago, Dartford Judokwai Club had only two school clubs, but since then is has developed links with 10 schools in all and their efforts have been rewarded by receiving a small National Lottery award.
This tournament was held in order to give the children experience of competition and to test their skills and knowledge. All-British Judo Association rules and etiquette were adhered to. BJA referees judged each match, while giving the children help and advice.
After weighing in, the 45 children were split into 10 groups according to weight and age. Gold medals were won by: Matty Humphries, Craig Sleightholme, Tom Featherstone, George Dodd, Stefan Nella, Jack Phillips, Daniel Roberts, Aidan Howe, Kayleigh Gilleeny, and Lucy Burton.
Silvers were awarded to: Tom Dodd, Matthew Cooper, Jamie Jones, Michael Gilleeny, Roley Harding, Jack Howe, Ben Brown, Sheelan Patel. Michael Stubberfield and Emma Hammond.
A Dartford Judokwai Club spokesman said: “If you haven't seen any judo, then you won't appreciate the courage that it takes for each child to compete on their own in front of an audience. Nor will you appreciate the etiquette which insists that each competitor bow to each other in respect before and after.
“There were no bad losers, no gloating winners and this is a one of the valuable lessons which is learned from this sport.
“It was a rewarding day for both competitors and us and we hope to stage another tournament later in the year.”
