BEXLEY AC narrowly failed to beat Division Two leaders Enfield & Haringey in the latest southern men's league match at Hillingdon on Saturday despite some fine individual performances.

Although on the track there was close competition from all five teams, it was in the throws and jumps where Enfield & Haringey proved too strong and showed why they have been unbeaten in all of their matches this season.

Nevertheless, the performance of the match came from Bexley's Jack Miller, who celebrated his 16th birthday by winning the 100m in 10.9s.

Chris Stanton made a strong debut following his recent arrival at the club, scoring 17 points out of a possible 20 when winning the B-string 110m hurdles (17.8s) and placing second in the javelin (45.93m), shot put (12.35m) and discus (30.88m).

There were a number of other notable victories.

Andy Powys and Shaun Medlen won both the A and B-string hammer with throws of 35.93m and 31.45m respectively, Paul Slater (6.22m) and Joe Ago (6.12m) triumphed in the A and B long jumps and Phil Hawkins triumphed in the B-string pole vault with a jump of 3.20m.

Martin Jenner came through strongly to win on the line in the B-string 400m hurdles (63.5s) and Frank Kilama ran to victory in the 1,500m (4m09.2s).

Bexley claimed second spot overall, a result which lifts them out of the relegation zone although they will need to maintain this improvement in the remaining three meetings if they are to preserve their Division Two status.

Result: First - Enfield & Haringey 134 points, Second - Bexley 128 points, Third - Walton 106 points, Fourth - Hillingdon 97 points, Fifth - Croydon 62 points.
