Cameron Horsman celebrated his 18th birthday early with victory at Oulton Park in the British Motostar Moto3 category of the British Superbike series.

The Forest Hill rider, who will celebrate his 18th birthday this week, took a race win and a second in the British Moto3 standard class at Oulton Park at the weekend.

The bank holiday weekend began with cloudy skies for the British Motostar Moto3 riders. This didn’t dampen Cameron Horsman’s spirits. The Forest Hill racer arrived here off the back of his first win in nearly two years in the British Talent Cup, where he is joint leader of the championship.

Free Practice

Late morning the Moto3 machines were started up for the first free practice session on Saturday. In FP1 he completed 8 laps setting a best time of 1:50.011. There was another free practice session during the afternoon. With the track conditions better than the morning Horsman was able to cut his lap time to 1:49.325 ending the day second fastest just 0.077 shy of the leading rider.

Qualifying

On Sunday the 16 standard class Moto3 riders, including Horsman, embarked on their 25-minute qualifying session. This is where the real business of the weekend began. It became a battle between Scott Ogden and Cameron Horsman, both winners at the recent British Talent Cup race, as to who would start on pole position. In the end Horsman took the honours with a lap time of 1:49.293.

Race One

Horsman made a good start to the 10 lap sprint race leading Scott Ogden across the line at the end of the first lap. The London rider managed to maintain the race lead for the first seven laps. Ogden then took over at the front but Horsman wasn’t done yet. He held on to the back wheel of Ogden before regaining the race lead on the very last lap. Horsman pushed on and crossed the finish line 0.155 seconds ahead of Ogden to take the opening Moto3 standard class victory of the 2019 season.

Race Two

If race one had been breathtaking from the first lap, the second was no less so but this time because Horsman had to chase down a gap of over four seconds. His main rival of the weekend, Scott Ogden, managed to make a better start. Whilst Ogden pulled away in the race lead Horsman was tangled up with Farrer in third, who traded places with the Forest Hill rider over the opening laps. Ogden was able to build a gap of 4.2 seconds over Horsman.

As the race continued Horsman managed to drop Farrer behind and began to reel in Scott Ogden out front. By the tenth lap Horsman had caught the back wheel of Ogden. The two then continued their battle, from the day before, over the final four laps.

This time Horsman had to settle for second place missing out on a double victory by 0.096 seconds. Although they have only completed the first round Horsman is joint leader of both the British Motostar and British Talent Cup championships.

Cameron Horsman said, “I am delighted to have got a win and a second this weekend. Thanks to Steve Patrickson who prepared a superb bike for me. I would like to thank my sponsors Nova Racing.”

His next race is at Donington Park in the second round of the British Talent Cup.
