Bexley enjoyed a top three finish at last weekend’s London Youth Games finals at Crystal Palace.

Gold medal success in the male football and indoor rowing contests, as well as silver in male swimming, bronze in triathlon and bronze in female football ensured Bexley finished third overall with 1,111 points behind Richmond (1,133pts) and winners Wandsworth (1,216pts).

Bromley were fifth overall (1,096pt) ahead of ninth-placed Greenwich (993pts) and Lewisham (831pts) in 24th out of the 33 London boroughs.

A last-gasp winner secured Bexley’s football team a 2-1 final win over Islington, leaving team manager Tommy Crowe delighted.

He said: “The boys done really well. It’s the first time the boys have got to the final.

“To win it in the last second was brilliant, they deserved it.”

Lewisham’s male football team won bronze after being knocked out 2-1 at the semi-final stage by Bexley.

Bromley’s fifth-placed finish was based on a trio of golds in the diving, male swimming and male squash.

There were also silvers in the male hockey, triathlon, female athletics, female swimming, as well as a bronze medal in female hockey.

Diving team manager Chris Snode said: “What’s good is none of the divers are going to be too old for the competition next year.

“In fact, the strength in depth was so great we had to run a trial, which is a fantastic thing for a minority sport.

“We had something like 15 divers trialling for each event and that depth has shown all the way through with very consistent diving at a top level.”

Greenwich athletes competed in more than 20 sports this year with the borough’s highlights angling gold together with silvers in rowing, female judo and male ParaGames swimming.

Speaking after winning angling gold, Greenwich team manager Damian Kostromski said: “I’m amazed, I’m very surprised because I didn’t think we were going to get in the top four.

“I’ve got a very good team. We came third, then fifth and now we’ve come first.”

Orpington’s British 100m record holder Dina Asher-Smith, who competed at the London Youth Games for Bromley in 2010, attended the weekend’s sporting spectacular.

She said: “The atmosphere is great and everyone is buzzing with excitement.

“The London Youth Games was such a great experience for me when I took part and the way it continues to grow and give young people from London the opportunity to compete is great for British sport.”
