After their disappointing late defeat on Monday, Welling United bounced back with a well deserved victory at East Thurrock United.

Two new players came into the squad during the week and both were given places in the starting line-up. Anthony Acheampong's loan period from Dulwich Hamlet ended after the defeat at Wealdstone and Magnus Okuonghae came in on loan from Maidstone United to replace him at centre back. His loan will take him through until the end of the season.

Up front, Welling supporters were delighted to welcome back last season's leading goalscorer Adam Coombes. He moved to Sutton United but suffered injury problems which pushed him down the pecking order. As a result he became available and has signed for Welling for the rest of this season and the next two.

Veteran East Thurrock striker Sam Higgins had the first effort on goal with a hopeful effort from twenty five yards that flew well over.

He was then given far too much space down the right wing but after cutting in, he could only thrash his shot into the side netting.

Ryan Hall created Welling's first opportunity when finding Coombes but his shot flew across the face of goal without troubling the keeper.

However, Lukas Lidakevicius was called into action when Welling next attacked. Coombes clever back-heel made space for an opening for Olumide Durojaiye and his shot was saved superbly by the foot of the Rocks' custodian.

Okuonghae then played a long ball out of defence behind the Thurrock back-line and Coombes collected before shooting wide of the near post.

Another Welling attack saw Coombes shepherded away from letting fly so he laid back to Jack Jebb who curled just over.

Jebb then turned provider when playing a clever ball in that Coombes dummied allowing Bradley Goldberg a sight at goal but Lidakevicius read it well to get into a position to make an outstanding save.

Whilst down to ten men through Lee Burns limping off with the substitute unprepared, East Thurrock came close to opening the scoring. Higgins sent Joe Christou away and his shot went just wide of the far post. Max Cornhill then had a chance from the edge of the area but made a complete hash of it and it rolled wide.

As the half came to an end, Welling again came close when Joe Healy came in late but could not keep his first time volley down from Jebb's excellent free kick.

Then Lidakevicius made another excellent save with his right boot as Goldberg spun and fired in a low shot.

Immediately after the break, the Rock's stopper was again called into action when saving from Coombes' header after he had met Hall's deep cross.

Hall then fired wide after Goldberg's shot was blocked out to him. Then Christou's shot for East Thurrock was going wide but took a slight touch for the hosts' first corner but the delivery was awful and it came to nothing.

Ten minutes of the second half had passed when Welling went ahead. Coombes was fouled midway inside the East Thurrock half and the Wings took full advantage. Jebb slung in a free kick that Healy headed goal-wards. Although it was saved it was only parried and Coombes was first to it to head home from close range.

Looking for an immediate response, Higgins crossed for Cornhill to meet with a diving header but it flew over without troubling Bailey Vose.

Christou snatched another effort well wide and Higgins fired over from distance as East Thurrock tried to find a way back into the game.

Substitute Jamie Philpot was then brought down on the edge of the area and Hall fired in a fierce free kick that Lidakevicius somehow kept out.

Finally Vose was called into action making a reaction save after a free kick was knocked on. Although the ball was eventually forced home by Christou, the flag had already been raised for offside.

Deep into injury time, Welling again came close when Jeffrey Monakana's cross found Philpot but he couldn't find a strong enough touch to win it.

It mattered little as Welling held on for the last few minutes to claim a well deserved win.

Welling United: Vose, Driver, Jefford, Durojaiye, Okuonghae, Parkinson, Jebb (Monakana 62), Healy, Goldberg (Philpot 76), Coombes (Nanetti 90), Hall. Subs not used: Coyle, Johnson.
