DARTFORD’S title challenge suffered a setback last night when they were held at Maidenhead.

Maidenhead showed in the opening minutes how they lowered Woking’s colours with a display of fast, through the middle football with quick low-gravity midfielders intent on putting Darts on the back foot.

A free-kick out wide left saw Martel Powell’s effort skim over the bar. Darts weathered the early minutes and set about controlling the game but, against the run of play, the hosts took the lead, Alex Wall hitting a deflected shot past Louis Wells to put United one up.

Steadily Darts got into the game and almost drew level from a free-kick awarded for shirt-pulling, but Adam Green’s curler was headed narrowly wide.

Then a quick break by Danny Harris saw the wide man feed Jon Wallis, who then returned the compliment, allowing Harris to power-head past the giant Billy Lamley in the home goal.

Just before half-time a rare break saw Maidenhead win a corner on the left. In a goalmouth skirmish Wells was yellow carded for a push and Maidenhead's Reece Tison-Lascaris was red carded for raising his hands at Wells.

The second half was nearly all Dartford but the vital balls into the box were really meat for Lamley, who held everything hit at him. Even a right-sided corner from Ryan Hayes delivered to the far post couldn't disturb Lamley's equilibrium.

Midway through the half Richard Graham was hacked down and replaced by Elliot Bradbrook following several minutes of on-pitch treatment. It was certainly a tackle warranting a straight red but the referee thought otherwise.

Right at the death Lamley suddenly collapsed in a heap all alone in his area and, on the stroke of the final whistle, made a recovery which couldn't have been matched by Lazarus.

The real plus for Darts on the evening was that Bradbrook is fully recovered from his long lay-off.
