BROMLEY suffered their worst defeat since March 1984 on Saturday with a humiliating loss at Weston-super-Mare.

The humiliating result was an embarrassment to all, none more so than the 30-odd hardy fans who made the long trip to support the Lillies.

Things started badly as the visitors fell behind as early as the second minute when Bromley keeper Craig Holloway made little attempt to save Jamie Price’s back header from Ben Kirk’s volley.

Holloway was extremely lucky to stay on the pitch in the after he had raced from goal to clatter Sahr Kabba to the ground to concede a penalty, being shown a yellow card when it could so easily have been red. Nat Pepperell stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way from the spot on 11 minutes and double Weston’s advantage.

It got even worse for Bromley when they were reduced to 10-men on 18 minutes as Tutu Henriques was dismissed after he had been turned by the lively Kabba and the defender pulled him back, therefore denying the centre forward a clear run at goal.

From the resultant free-kick just outside the 18-yard box, Martin Slocombe put his side three goals in front by riffling home into the top corner of the net.

The home side might have had another on 24 minutes when Kabba broke clear again to release Pepperell, whose firmly struck shot was turned around for a corner by Holloway at the foot of the post.

Bromley’s first attempt on goal came on the half hour when, following an excellent passing exchange between Tony Finn and Leon McKenzie, Warren McBean rounded a defender and the keeper only to run the ball out of play instead of into an empty net. This rather summed up Bromley’s dismal afternoon.

As the interval approached, Kabba, Kane Ingram and Brett Trowbridge all squandered good chances to increase their team’s lead.

The introduction at half-time of Danny Hockton and Howard Newton in place of McKenzie and Ryan Dolby had no effect whatsoever, as Weston resumed their attacking stance immediately.

Wes Daly saw his clearance ricochet off of Jerrome Sobers into the path of Kabba, whose shot was blocked by David Graves before, 10 minutes later, Kabba’s free-kick came back off the upright.

As Bromley struggled to hold their game together, gaps began to appear at the back, so it was no surprise when Weston increased their lead with 13 minutes remaining when Ben Kirk took full advantage of some sloppy defending to poke home from 10 yards.

Trowbridge and substitute Marcus Duharty both crashed shots wide before the latter added goal number five on 85 minutes with a free close range header from Price’s pinpoint cross.

Another substitute, Ryan Leonard, shot wide when well placed but with one minute remaining, Duharty looped a shot over Holloway, who was off his line, for goal number six.

Bromley’s humiliation was complete in added time as a flowing movement down the left flank ended with Simon Gilbert picking his spot past an exposed keeper.

The management team must be ruing their decision to release captain and centre half John Scarborough, whose leadership on the field of play was obviously missed.
