Tomorrow night could prove to be a landmark day in the history of Gravesend and Northfleet Football Club, when people keen to see the club thrive are meeting at the Stonebridge Road ground. A spokesman for the proposed Supporters’ Trust said: “This is the chance for all of us who are interested in and enjoy football, to support our local club for the forthcoming season in the Nationwide Conference League.

“Much has been written and discussed, over the last two years, regarding the ever-increasing costs of running football teams, from local schoolboy teams right through to the Premiership.

“Fortunately for us, the directors and management, ably supported by fan assistance, have managed to keep Fleet solvent, which is no mean achievement these days!

“On the pitch, the players have done their part and kept the side in the Conference League, giving us enjoyment, pain, stress and, finally, accomplishment!

“However, we all want Fleet to progress further and this will need additional financial support, and this is where we come in.

A small group of existing fans is planning to set up a Supporters’ Trust.

“It will a democratic, not-for-profit organisation of supporters, committed to strengthening the voice for fans in the decision-making process at a club and strengthening the links between it and the community it serves.

“The Trust will provide financial assistance to the club and become a shareholder in it.

“Our first establishment meeting will be held on Thursday at 7.30pm for an 8pm start in the social club.

“Invited will be directors, management and players, current and former, representation of local dignitaries and, hopefully, a speaker from an already-established trust fund at another club.

“Also attending will be a professional advisor from Supporters Direct, an organisation set up to provide assistance and funded by the Government and the FA) and of course us and you.

“We urge anyone interested in the Fleet to attend and if you would like further details, please call 01474 533796.”
