Following their midweek disappointment Welling United bounced back with an emphatic victory at Chippenham Town.

Hardenhuish Park is not an easy place from which to claim three points but Welling put in an excellent performance and were good value for their victory.

Manager Steve King rotated his squad and made four changes to the starting line up.

Early half chances went the way of the hosts. The Bluebirds’ leading goalscorer, Karnell Chambers had the first one and although bound for the bottom corner it did not have sufficient power to trouble Dan Wilks.

Kieran Parselle then worked himself into a good position but his on-target shot also failed to worry Wilks’

Josh Smile then tried his luck with a free kick, but again Wilks made a comfortable save.

When Welling had their first opportunity they took full advantage. Bradley Goldberg had a header blocked as far as Brendan Kiernan and his first time effort from the edge of the area flew into the top corner.

Andy Sandell headed wide from a corner before Chippenham levelled.

Sandell launched a long throw in, it got a knock on and Chambers was on hand to finish.

Parity didn’t last too long as Welling went back ahead soon after. Danny Mills was brought down on the edge of the area and after consultation with his assistant referee, the main official awarded a penalty. Bradley Goldberg stepped up and sent Will Henry the wrong way.

Jordan Gibbons and Kiernan combined well but the former was unable to find the target before Welling added a third goal five minutes before the break. Mills powered a header towards goal from a Jack Jebb corner. Will Henry made a stunning save but it came out as far as Thierry Audel who hooked into the top corner for his second goal of the season.

After the break Goldberg caught a defender in possession but shot straight at Henry as Welling looked to drive home their advantage.

Jebb then sent Mills away but he was unable to find the target with his shot. He then returned the favour by pulling back to Jebb but his low shot towards the bottom was turned around the post by a diving Henry.

At the other end Sandell had a hopeful shot deflected wide before he brought a regulation save out of Wilks at the near post.

Chances then became more of a rarity as Welling proved hard to break down and the closest Chippenham came to putting the game to bed was when Chambers drilled a low cross across the face of goal but nobody was able to apply the final touch.

The game was finished as a contest with nine minutes remaining when Mills collected a pass in midfield and played it out to the right wing. He then sprinted to get into the box to meet the cross and headed back across goal for Kiernan to head home.
