A late Lauren Allison header ensured that Oxford United came from behind to secure a 3-2 victory at Millwall Lionesses in FA WSL 2.

Oxford staged an almighty fight back in the second half to consolidate their superior league position and pull themselves away from the struggling Lionesses in the table.

United showed their ruthless quality early on and Destiney Touissant, who was a constant menace to the Millwall back line, put the away side ahead after meeting Allison’s teasing cross at the back post.

Millwall came back into the game in the latter stages of the first half and following some good pressure, Ciera Sherwood was cynically brought down in the penalty area and Lilli Maple converted the resulting spot kick.

The Lionesses continued to press the away side and their pressure paid off after the break when Rinsola Babadige rifled her long range effort into the bottom left hand corner.

Then against the run of play, Oxford’s Kat Nutman pounced on some questionable defensive confusion just after the hour mark to break away and slot her effort coolly into the top corner to level proceedings.

The away side then sealed the victory late on when the impressive Allison rose well to head powerfully into the bottom corner from a corner kick.

Lionesses goalkeeper Sarah Quantrill said: “I think in the second half we came out strong and we really had the chances to build on our lead.

“We just needed to take them and put it to bed.

“I think confidence at the moment is so low that once we go behind we just crumble.

“We just needed something to go our way and then we can build on our leads.

“I think we need to keep the ball better, take our chances and defend better as a team.”
