While Welling United may question some key decisions that didn't go their way, they were soundly beaten by an experienced Torquay United team.

Ryan Bowman hit a low cross into the side netting and Thomas Cruise curled an effort harmlessly wide for Torquay before a foul on Rod Young offered Welling their first chance. Harry Beautyman's free kick was met by Jamal Fyfied at the far post but he was unable to rise high enough to cause any danger.

Courtney Cameron's wonderful pass set up the opening goal for the Gulls after 14 minutes. Bowman's first touch was perfect to allow him to round Lee Butcher before passing into the empty net.

It should probably have been 2-0 in the 27th minute. Ashley Yeoman was set up for a shot that Butcher did well to beat out, Louis Briscoe's follow up was blocked by Chris Bush, then Yeoman's cross to the far post was not converted by Bowman.

Bush hit a speculative long shot wide for Welling before a foul presented the Gulls with another opportunity. Luke Young fired in a free kick that was tipped over acrobatically by Butcher.

Beautyman had a shot saved by Martin Rice and he set a counter-attack up with a good kick down the wing that resulted in the Gulls winning a corner. The delivery evaded all but Briscoe fired well over at the far post.

As if things weren't hard enough for Welling, referee Richard Martin gave them a mountain to climb when awarding a soft penalty for a perceived foul by Loui Fazakerley on Cameron who converted himself.

Joe Healy almost pulled one back early in the second period but just failed to hit the target after good work by Beautyman.

Bowman missed another chance for Torquay, heading wide when unmarked from Cameron's free kick but Welling came back with a Tyrone Marsh shot that was deflected over.

Rice saved a Beautyman shot and Young and Bowman had chances for Torquay before the referee made another key decision in the penalty area. Afolabi Obafemi had a goalbound effort blocked by a Torquay hand but all Welling appeals were ignored.

Obafemi and Marsh then combined to give Beautyman an opening and Rice was called upon to make a brilliant save.

A couple of Ben Jefford crosses caused problems, Young shot wide and Fazakerley hit the post before awful defending presented ex-Wing Toby Ajala with the Gulls third.

Another penalty shout was turned down when Jake Gallagher's shot appeared to strike a hand but the damage had already been done by then.

To their credit, Welling continued to press and Healy headed a Beautyman corner narrowly wide, Bush had a drive deflected over and Fyfield was twice thwarted by great saves by Rice. It was all to no avail however and Jamie Day now has to pick them up for another tough journey to AFC Halifax on Saturday.

Welling United: Butcher, Fazakerley, Jefford, Healy, Bush, Fyfield, Beautyman (Gorman 81), Gallagher, Abofemi, Marsh, Young (Ouani 69). Unused substitutes: Turner, Williams, Day.
