Cray Wanderers manager Ian Jenkins praised his side for their fighting spirit as they came back from two goals down to earn a point in a highly entertaining game against Carshalton Athletic on Sunday.

Cray's early-season struggles at the wrong end of the Ryman Premier table looked set to continue after dreadful defensive errors handed Carshalton a two-goal lead after only seven minutes.

But the Wands recovered from their uncertain start and dramatically levelled the score with quick-fire goals from left winger Tyrone Sterling in the 15th and 17th minutes.

Sterling headed in a Ross Lover cross and then crashed a first-time volley into the net from a very narrow angle after receiving a long pass from Cray's new centre half John Guest who is on loan from Dartford.

Showing themselves to be more than a match for their higher-placed opponents, Cray deservedly took the lead just before half time when Jamie Wood rocketed in a free-kick from the edge of the box after a jinking run by Lover had opened up the Robins hard-pressed defence.

Cray were to rue some near misses just before and after the interval, when Carshalton broke away to equalise against the run of play on 57 minutes.

A point leaves the Wands still fourth from bottom in the table, but Jenkins will take plenty of heart from the good football that he saw his team produce after their recent run of poor form and results.

Cray have no fixture this coming Saturday, and will return to action at Horsham on 7 November (3pm).
