CHARLTON were crowned champions of League One with a 2-1 win over Wycombe Wanderers at The Valley this afternoon.

Sheffield United lost by a single goal to Milton Keynes Dons, so even if the Addicks had drawn against the Chairboys, they would have still wrapped up the title.

Yann Kermorgant and Dale Stephens were the heroes despite Stuart Beavon's equaliser on the stroke of half-time, but with the home faithful itching for the final whistle in Buckinghamshire, SE7 erupted when it was officially announced over the tannoy system.

Inside a party atmosphere at The Valley, manager Chris Powell, owner Tony Jimenez, chairman Michael Slater and former chairman Richard Murray came out of the tunnel to a rousing reception before kick-off.

However, the visitors, looking to climb out of the relegation zone, were looking to spoil the party and striker Beavon had the first chance of the match, but dragged a shot wide from outside the box.

Charlton hit back immediately and were denied by a goal-line clearance by Craig Eastmond from Bradley Wright-Phillips' header. And from the rebound, Leon Cort's header was saved comfortably by Nikki Bull.

Back came Gary Waddock's side, and they went very close to taking the lead through Matt Bloomfield's drive, which whizzed past Ben Hamer's post, while moments later, Joel Grant took aim with a dipping effort that sailed just over the crossbar.

Wright-Phillips tested Bull with a stinging shot inside the box shortly after, but the home faithful didn't have to wait long for the opening goal - and what a strike it was.

Johnnie Jackson and Yann Kermorgant stood over a free-kick from 30-yards out, and the latter curled a lovely set-piece over the Chairboys' wall and away from Bull's reach into the corner of the net.

The applause was met by the news that Milton Keynes Dons had taken the lead over title challengers Sheffield United.

And on 20 minutes, Wright-Phillips should have doubled the lead when he manged to fend off Wycombe's last man, but Bull stuck out a leg to save the striker's low shot inside the box.

Dale Stephens was next to take aim, but his 25-yard effort flew wide of the goal, before Bradley Pritchard got on the end of a delightful pass from Chris Solly, but the midfielder's volley was acrobatically saved by Bull.

And from the corner, Cort and Kermorgant both challenged for the ball, but the latter saw a glancing header sail wide of the back post.

Shortly before half-time, Wright-Phillips again saw off the visitors' last man following a through-ball, but his shot went agonisingly wide by a matter of inches.

It really should have been at least two-nil to the Addicks, who were completely dominant in the opening 45 minutes.

However, against the run of play, Wycombe equalised through Beavon on the stroke of half-time.

A deflected pass fell into the path of the forward, who saw a first effort parried by Hamer.

Wycombe right-back Marvin McCoy delivered the ball back into the danger area and Beavon guided a powerful header past the despairing dive of Hamer.

The Valley fell silent, but the home supporters applauded their team off deservedly at the break - only to rue the missed chances they had witnessed, which should have seen them out of sight.

Wycombe began the second period the better and they were nearly gifted a second goal six minutes in when a harmless-looking ball over the top caused confusion between Solly and Cort, and the ball fell to Grant on the edge of the box, but Cort made a superb block.

And two minutes later, another lapse in the Addicks' defence saw Bloomfield weave his way into a shooting opportunity inside the box, but again, Cort dived in to make a timely block.

On the hour, Solly got to the byline and delivered a superb ball across the six-yard area towards Jackson, but McCoy managed to avert the danger away for a corner.

The hosts had Hamer to thank for pulling off a good low save to deny Grant inside the box, and you could sense a huge element of frustration creeping in among the natives.

However, after 67 minutes, the Addicks were still on course to be crowned champions.

And despite a lacklustre start to the second period, Charlton doubled their lead on 74 minutes, when a ball towards the back post found Kermorgant, who headed into the path of the Stephens, and the midfielder drilled home into the bottom corner.

There should have been a third just a minute later when a lovely through-ball from Kermorgant found substitute Danny Haynes, but the pacy forward was thwarted by Bull down to his left.

Haynes had a great chance to make amends on 82 minutes, but fluffed his lines unmarked inside the danger area.

Kermorgant was the architect again, stealing the ball from former Addick Grant Basey, before bombing down the right and playing a ball across to the former Barnsley and Ipwich Town man on the far side, but a heavy touch saw Bull get to the ball first.

The visitors were certainly not out of it, and with three minutes remaining, neat play between Beavon and Lewis saw the latter bomb into the box, but Hamer stood up to deny him.

But the day belonged to the Addicks, who were confirmed champions of League One after Sheffield United lost against Karl Robinson's side.

The Valley erupted, Chris Powell was hoisted up into the air by his players, and there was a new fan in attendance cheering on the Addicks - American Pie actor Eddie Kaye Thomas, best known as 'Finch' from the comedy films.

Charlton are back on the up, and they can certainly afford to have a laugh now.

Looking ahead to next season back in the Championship, they'll be back pitting their wits against the likes of Crystal Palace and Millwall once again.
