A FANTASTIC strike from Jay Simpson ensured Millwall took a deserved point against Brighton & Hove Albion at The Den this evening.

The frontman let rip from a full 25 yards with 10 minutes remaining to grab a dramatic equaliser for Kenny Jackett's men, who should have been at least two goals up at half-time.

And those missed chances in the first period from the Lions nearly proved costly as Albion came out the better in the second-half before taking the lead through Craig Noone.

Millwall nearly took the lead after just 55 seconds when Liam Feeney managed to find Darius Henderson with a deep cross towards the far post but the striker's effort back towards goal was parried away by Casper Ankergren.

And minutes later, Kenny Jackett's side should have taken the lead through Henderson after a great cross from Brian Howard, but the former Watford targetman powerfully headed yards wide when completely unmarked.

Brighton carved out their first opportunity of the match on 14 minutes when Will Hoskins charged down the right before turning Scott Barron inside out, and his cross nearly deceived Lions goalkeeper David Forde who did enough to turn the ball away for a corner.

And just three minutes later, the Seagulls were awarded a penalty when Craig Mackail-Smith ghosted around Darren Ward inside the area, before the slightest of touches from Forde was enough to knock the Scottish international to the ground.

But Forde redeemed himself by saving Ryan Harley's poor spot-kick, before the ball went out of play for a goal kick.

On 23 minutes, Howard forced a good save from Ankergren directly from a free-kick 20 yards out, before Henderson could only follow up with an effort just wide.

Feeney tried his luck on 27 minutes on the edge of the box after turning his marker superbly, but couldn't force Ankergren into a save with a shot flying wide.

And moments later, captain Paul Robinson maybe should have done better from 12 yards directing a header well wide from Feeney's cross.

Just seconds later, Millwall really cranked up the pressure when Jimmy Abdou produced a moment of brilliance on the edge of the area with an acrobatic scissor kick but his effort was a matter of inches wide with Ankergren well beaten.

With 33 minutes played, the Lions should have, again, taken the lead when a delightful ball in from Howard following a short corner was met by the head of Darren Ward at the far post, but Ankergren pulled off a fantastic save on the line before Henderson failed to direct the rebound towards goal from four yards.

And just two minutes, another chance went begging for Jackett's men when another fantastic delivery from Howard was flicked on towards the back post, but Liam Trotter somehow headed down and wide by a matter of inches.

Brighton nearly took the lead against the run of play on 38 minutes when Hoskins received the ball on the left side of the box following a quick break forward, and as the striker cut inside, his goalbound shot was deflected wide off Ward for a corner.

And on the stroke of half-time, the visitors should have taken the lead when Noone burst down the left, unable to notice an unmarked Mackail-Smith on the far side, before taking on a couple of Lions defenders and directing a shot wide of Forde's far post.

The visitors started the second period as they left off from the end of the first, when Harley drove forward on the break, and despite calls from Mackail-Smith bursting forward to his left, he tested Forde with a 20-yard shot which the custodian did well to parry away.

And on the hour, Gus Poyet's side took the lead thanks to an emphatic finish from Noone, who ghosted in at the back post from a deep cross before finding the top corner from close range.

The Lions forced their first chance of the second-half on 68 minutes when excellent work by Feeney on the right found Dunne creeping in at the back post, but the full-back couldn't get a clean connection on his header towards goal.

Brighton continued to counter on the break and on 75 minutes, good play by Noone on the right found Harley unmarked on the edge of the box, but his shot flew over Forde's crossbar to the relief of the home faithful.

And just a minute later, Noone found space on the edge of the area but couldn't direct a shot towards Forde.

But on 80 minutes, the Lions grabbed the equaliser thanks to a a thunderbolt from Simpson from 25 yards out.

The forward picked the ball up inside Brighton's half, before opening up with a long range effort which swerved towards goal, and despite getting a hand to the ball, Ankergren was beaten by the ferocity of the strike.

Noone nearly grabbed the winner in the second minute of stoppage time for Albion when his cross-cum-shot was missed at the far post by Ashley Barnes, before going inches wide of Forde's post.

But the home side held on to pick up a battling point against one of this season's strongest sides as the referee brought an end to a frantic 90 minutes of football.
