Millwall gained belated revenge for their 2009 play-off final defeat by convincingly beating Scunthorpe at The Den.

The Iron denied the Lions a place in the Championship by beating them 3-2 at Wembley 18 months ago but Millwall went some way to banishing the memory with an emphatic success tonight.

Steve Morison had a glorious chance to put the hosts in front on 14 minutes after he burst through on goal but the Lions striker dragged his low shot just wide of the post.

But the home fans had something to cheer midway through the first half when Millwall took the lead.

Danny Shittu’s clearance picked out James Henry on the halfway line and the winger went on a run before firing a low drive beyond the reach of Scunthorpe keeper Joe Murphy from 30 yards.

Michael O’Connor’s 26th minute free-kick went just over David Forde’s crossbar as Scunthorpe almost made a quick response to falling behind.

Morison’s 33rd minute header from Henry’s cross was unfortunate not to make it 2-0, instead landing on top of the net as opposed to the back of it.

Calvin Andrew should have done better just before the break with a header from close range which went over, while Freddie Sears went close for the visitors with a shot that was blocked by Tamika Mkandawire at the expense of a corner.

Recent signing Josh McQuoid was introduced at the start of the second half for his Lions debut as the AFC Bournemouth loanee entered the fray in place of Andrew.

Mkandawire almost added a second 10 minutes after the interval with a header from six yards which should really have found the target.

But McQuoid missed an even clearer opportunity on the hour when his header from Jason Puncheon’s cross also sailed agonisingly wide.

Murphy did well to push out Mkandawire’s 75th minute 25 yard effort but there was nothing the Iron keeper could do to prevent Morison increasing the advantage six minutes later with a clever shot from the acutest of angles.

Morison wrapped the game up by grabbing his second of the game on 86 minutes with a powerful low shot from 18 yards to lift Millwall up to 11th spot in the table.
