SCOTT Wagstaff's first half goal secured back-to-back wins for Charlton as they beat Sheffield Wednesday at The Valley.

Former Addick Nicky Weaver produced a super save on five minutes to keep out Matt Fry's volley as the hosts started brightly.

The Owls keeper had to be alert again seven minutes later to deny Johnnie Jackson's low drive, although Paul Benson was adjudged to have been offside before Wagstaff could make a connection with the rebound.

Benson headed just wide from Fry's cross on the quarter hour, while Christian Dailly's mistake at the other end allowed Marcus Tudgay to get in a shot, which was pushed behind by Rob Elliot.

Charlton broke the deadlock on 23 minutes when a corner was cleared to Wagstaff and although his initial effort was blocked, the winger's second shot from the edge of the area went in the bottom right corner past Weaver.

Tommy Miller's 28th minute shot was deflected by Jose Semedo into the arms of Elliot before Weaver came to Wednesday's rescue by producing another fine save to deny Wagstaff his second of the afternoon.

Tommy Spurr headed Benson's effort off the line but Wednesday came more into it as the half drew to a close, with Tudgay seeing a shot blocked by Dooherty and Neil Mellor firing just wide following a poor clearance by Elliot.

Joe Anyinsah almost saw his persistence rewarded five minutes after the break when he kept going despite several challenges to break into the box but his eventual shot was easily dealt with by Weaver.

Benson's 56th minute header from corner from Francis' corner was deflected behind by a Wednesday player.

Miller's low cross across the face of goal gave a timely reminder on 63 minutes and then Mellor fired wide to underline Wednesday were still firmly in this game with the score only 1-0.

Anyinsah, who had worked his socks off, was replaced by Lee Martin on 71 minutes as Phil Parkinson made his first substitution of the game.

Martin's 79th minute curling cross picked out Benson but he fired over, while Clinton Morrison claimed he was tripped by Elliot moments later only to see his penalty claim ignored.

Mellor should have done better when he headed wide Jermaine Johnson's inviting cross as the tension began to increase among the anxious home fans.

Wednesday were awarded a free-kick just outside of the area in the 89th minute but Daniel Jones' effort flew well over the bar, much to the delight of the home fans behind Elliot's goal.

Lee Martin was booked in stoppage time for diving in the Wednesday area while looking for a penalty.

But Charlton deservedly held on for victory and left the field to cheers as opposed to the boos which echoed in their ears after the last home game against Brighton.
