Millwall manager Kenny Jackett was delighted to come away with three points in a hard-fought derby at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

A typically tense clash was settled early in the second half when Lions striker Theo Robinson reacted quickest to a Steve Morison flick on to round onrushing Palace keeper Julian Speroni before slotting home from an acute angle.

Robinson’s strike secured Millwall the bragging rights for the 4,800 travelling away fans and Jackett could not hide his delight in winning a derby game which had not taken place in five seasons.

He said: “It was a typical London derby. It was competitive, fierce and very tight.

“It was always going to be a hard fought win because Crystal Palace’s home record is very good.

“It was a derby we haven’t been involved in for quite a number of years, so to come out of it with three points is terrific, particularly since it has been a while since the last victory.”

The Lions chief singled out match winner Robinson after the on-loan Huddersfield striker gave a committed performance and the boss is hoping to see more of the same from the young striker.

Jackett said: “It was one of the harder chances in the game, he did very well from an acute angle once he had rounded the keeper.

“He was a threat and it was a very good contribution and an absolutely vital goal. He is still 21, so we will see how he develops really.

“Theo is on loan with us and hopefully we can get more performances from him like that.”

The victory halted a run of seven games without a win for the Lions and Jackett is hoping his side can learn from their mistakes and continue to get to grips with life in the Championship.

He said: “After the Watford game we said we needed to be tighter at the back because you can’t be giving goals as it is an un-forgiving division.

“We have to identify what we have done and learn about this division because we have to make sure we are on our game, defend very well and try to limit the opposition in terms of chances.

“Hopefully we can build on this platform because it is about us learning and coming to grips with this division because it is a very good division.”
