Millwall smashed hapless Charlton in this afternoon’s big derby game at The Den to earn the south east London bragging rights.

Darren Ward put the Lions in front on the stroke of half-time before the Addicks completely capitulated after Christian Dailly’s 74th minute own goal was quickly added to by Steve Morison’s brace.

Neil Harris was named on the bench after Millwall’s record goal scorer missed the 3-1 victory at Carlisle on Tuesday.

Harris had been expected to recover in time to face the Addicks, but manager Kenny Jackett opted to kick-off with the Morison-Shaun Batt partnership which started the game at Brunton Park.

Meanwhile, Charlton winger Lloyd Sam was only a substitute as Phil Parkinson opted to play Kyel Reid on the right wing with skipper Nicky Bailey on the left.

Jose Semedo and Therry Racon made up the Addicks’ central midfield partnership, with David Mooney partnering by Akpo Sodje up front.

Reid saw an ambitious second minute free-kick sail over the bar when he might have been better advised to try and pick out a Charlton team mate in a crowded area.

Alan Dunne placed a header straight into the hands of Rob Elliot at the other end as Millwall launched their first attack.

Chris Solly recovered his composure well to clear the danger after Morison had brushed him aside when getting on the end of David Forde’s long punt into the Charlton area on nine minutes.

Therry Racon attempted a cheeky back flick on goal in the 17th minute from 10 yards out, although the effort lacked power and conviction.

Morison’s pass into the danger zone took a deflection off Christian Dailly, but Elliot made a comfortable save.

Mooney’s 22nd minute shot was blocked by a Millwall defender and Akpo Sodje blazed the rebound over the bar from the edge of the area.

Batt shrugged off Miguel Llera far too easily in the box two minutes later but his pass to Morison was cleared, while Reid’s cross at the other end went behind for a goal-kick.

The best move of the game so far came when Reid picked out Bailey with a delightful cross-field pass and the Addicks’ skipper’s powerful shot from 18 yards was a decent one, although it was some way off the target.

Mooney’s first time volley from 25 yards drifted harmlessly over on the half hour, but Batt should have done better seconds later when he was put clean through by Danny Schofield before firing straight at Elliot.

Reid tried an ambitious shot from 25 yards which went wide, while Llera’s blushes were somewhat spared after his mistake put Morison through but the Millwall striker stumbled and the chance was gone.

The Lions took the lead on 44 minutes when they were awarded a corner, which was swung in by Chris Hackett and headed home by Ward to give Millwall a narrow interval advantage.

Elliot could only punch clear Morison’s dangerous bal into a packed six-yard box five minutes after the restart before Charlton’s defence finally cleared the danger.

The Charlton keeper had to be alert again four minutes later to get down low and gather Morison’s shot on target.

Millwall had a lucky escape on the hour when Forde just about kept out Frazer Richardson’s corner.

Liam Trotter had a penalty appeal ignored two minutes later when he went to ground under a challenge from Christian Dailly.

Harris finally entered the fray in the 64th minute when he came off the bench for Batt and he almost made an instant impact when his cross was just headed wide by Morison.

Charlton’s first change came shortly afterwards as Sam replaced Racon, with Reid moving straight into his favoured position on the left and Bailey switching into the centre.

Reid and Mooney both went for a shot at the same time as the opportunity went begging, while Akpo Sodje blazed over shortly afterwards as the visitors attempted to get back on terms.

But those hopes were well and truly dashed in the 74th minute when Hackett gave Solly short shrift and put in a cross which the unfortunate Dailly put into his own net.

And things very quickly went from bad to worse three minutes later when a mistake gifted Harris possession and his long ball picked out Morison completely unmarked, who drilled a low shot past Elliot to make the game safe.

Hackett almost added a fourth when he fired narrowly over after playing a one-two with Schofield from a corner.

But it soon became 4-0 in the 80th minute when Hackett’s shot was saved by Elliot but the rebound was smashed home by Morison for his second of the afternoon.

Dunne headed agonisingly over from Hackett’s 86th minute free-kick as the Lions went on the rampage.

Millwall’s fans began the party as soon as the final whistle went, but few Charlton supporters were left by this stage as large numbers had already made a sharp exit once the third and fourth goals went in.

This was a pitiful display from the Addicks and easily their worst result of the season.

The inquest in SE7 will undoubtedly be a very long and painful one.
