Charlton 2-0 Yeovil

Goals either side of the break from Kyel Reid and David Mooney were enough to sink the Glovers and there was even better news for Addicks fans when it was confirmed both Leeds and Norwich had dropped points again.

New signing Johnnie Jackson was involved in Charlton’s first attack in the seventh minute when he provided the cross which Deon Burton fired harmlessly wide from 12 yards.

But the Addicks had a lucky escape two minutes later after Sam Williams was picked out by strike partner Dean Bowditch and only the quick thinking of Rob Elliot denied him.

A clever Burton dummy put Nicky Bailey clean through on goal in the 12th minute but his effort was kept out by the legs of Alex McCarthy in the Yeovil goal.

Elliot came to the rescue again six minutes later when he saved from an unmarked Williams, who had beaten the offside trap when getting on the end of Shaun MacDonald’s pass into the danger zone.

Lloyd Sam made the most of a deflection to get inside the box and pick out Mooney, but his shot was charged down by Terrell Forbes.

Charlton had a penalty appeal ignored when Therry Racon’s shot appeared to be handled by MacDonald, while Williams tried his luck from long range at the other end moments later but it sailed harmlessly over.

Mooney should have done better when he fired over on 28 minutes but the home fans didn’t have long to wait for the breakthrough to come as the Addicks went in front one minute later.

Reid picked up possession inside his own half and his run on goal ended with a stunning 25-yard shot which flew into the back of the net, although keeper McCarthy should have done better it has to be said.

Elliot produced another fine stop to keep out Craig Alcock's bullet header from Aaron Davies’ corner and Craig Alcock’s ambitious long range effort went over moments later.

Sam came within inches of adding a second for the Addicks five minutes before the break with a shot from just outside of the area which just cleared the bar by a matter of inches.

Yeovil’s Owain Tudor Jones took one for the team six minutes after the break when he charged down Reid’s shot in a very sensitive area, much to the amusement of the home fans.

They were in even better form in the 54th minute when Frazer Richardson’s throw in picked out Racon inside the area and his low ball was drilled home by Mooney from 12 yards.

Yeovil came back strongly and Davies was denied by Elliot’s save and then by Richardson blocked a shot from the resulting corner.

McCarthy had to be alert to keep out Reid’s effort on the hour and Mooney fired over from the rebound.

Only a top save from McCarthy kept out Burton in the 66th minute before things began to settle down somewhat, making it no real surprise when Phil Parkinson chose to replace Sam with Scott Wagstaff 10 minutes later.

The news Norwich and Leeds were both losing at this point certainly stirred some life into the home support.

McCarthy was a relieved man four minutes from the end as Richardson’s cross went wide when the visiting keeper was under pressure from Burton.

Substitute Gavin Tomlin’s shot forced Elliot to concede a 90th minute corner and Tomlin was unfortunate not to get on the end of Dean Bowditch’s cross moments later.

But the Addicks kept Yeovil at bay to seal their first clean sheet since the 1-0 win over Southend in early December.
